California Recap Part One

by Brooke on July 29, 2007

I’ve decided to post our vacation pics over several days, so tonight I thought I’d do our day at Sea World, even though we went there toward the end of our vacation. I decided not to take my SLR camera because of how big it is, so I had my mom’s point-and-shoot with me. Nice that it fit right in my pocket!! A few of these pics were also taken by my sis-in-law Amy and my FIL.

The weather was perfect–cool and overcast. We got there late morning and immediately went to the Shamu tank, where we did the “Dine With Shamu” lunch! It was so much fun to have our tables right next to the tank, where we got to eat lunch while we watched the whale jump and wave and swim around. It was so cool!! Annie slept through most of it but Brandon loved it.

After lunch we went straight to the “Believe” show in the Shamu Stadium. Those whales are so amazing and entertaining! I can’t believe they can heave their massive bodies into the air doing flips and tricks. (click on picture to make larger.)

Annie LOVED this show and was really into it. She kept shouting and clapping and putting her hands in the air to do the “Sham Slam.” It was too adorable. She kept saying, “Shamu, Shamu, YAY!”

Brandon REEEEEAAAALLLYY wanted to go on the roller coaster ride there–called Journey to Atlantis–so he and Jaden spent some time in the line and we went to look at some other exhibits. We saw the penguins and puffins, polar bears, walruses, beluga whales, etc. Annie loved looking through the glass at the beluga whales.

When we were looking at the walrus, a HUGE one came right up to the glass, all ugly with his big whiskery mouth and long tusks and bald head, eating a fish and spitting it out, smashing it all against the glass–it was GROSS!! So gross. Scared Annie to death because it was like right in our face!! Crazy. So Annie kept saying, “Ewww. Gross.” I’m sorry, but the walrus is not a good looking creature. Hopefully nobody ever tells you that you remind them of a walrus, it is NOT a compliment. :) This picture does not do it justice.

After the walrus scare we bought Annie a little stuffed Shamu toy because she loved the Shamu show so much. She kept kissing it and making it swim around her. :)

Meanwhile, Brandon and Jaden got SOAKED on the Atlantis ride! Brandon was so brave and really had fun. He’s still talking about how the water poured on them and how steep it was.

Next came the dolphin show. I love the dolphins! Again, very entertaining and amazing. Brandon watched the show with his shirt off and tried to take everything else off because he was drenched–so THAT was fun. :) I’m sure it was entertaining for the people behind us. But here are some pics of the dolphins. (click to make picture larger)

Brandon at another show, I think it was with sea lions and otters. All of the shows there are great.

We got to touch some manta rays in their little shallow pool.

Here we are toward the end of the day. It has been years since I’ve been to Sea World and we all loved it. I’m a little bit jealous that Jaime gets to go there anytime she wants!! :) Hope to visit Shamu again soon!!

I think I just re-lived our California trip after viewing your blog. Good times…. Anyway, I think you stole a few of those photos from my camera so you’d better give me some credit for snapping some good pics! (Just kidding! What’s mine is yours!) Anyway, just wanted to tell you that I love you guys and miss you already!

I have to agree with Amy, I lived vicariously through your eyes and photos you took while you were at Sea World. Man I miss that place, but then again, it’s been like 30 years since I’ve been there…yep I’m a dinosaur, yet I don’t look it LOL!! This is where we need to go on vacation instead of the infamous Disneyland….I love these animals, great photos and so glad you all had a fun time!

GORGEOUS pics! wow! Now I have to ask what kind of point and shoot it was? Mine does not take that good of pics. Kind of disappointing. And it’s new. LOL

You have a beautiful family!

that pic of the walrus and the killer whale up on the deck. So neat!

I haven’t been to Sea World for years. After seeing the fun time you guys had, I think I need to plan a trip there. I love all the pictures. The walrus one made me laugh. I have to agree with you…they are not cute at all!

How fun! I think we’ll have to take a trip there when we go to Disneyland next year! I love that Brandon did a little strip show for everyone…he’s such a character! I love the ones of Annie clapping and shouting for Shamu! Way cute! Can’t wait to see the other pictures!
