Fun-ness

by Brooke on June 9, 2008

On the second Monday of every month, my cousins and all of our kids gather at my Grandma’s house for potluck lunch. It’s so fun to get together and let the kids play their little hearts out and let us adults have actual conversations! Today Julie and Kirsten and I were feeling a bit nostalgic as we remembered the fun times we would have at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s when we were little, and how crazy it is that now we watch our own children play where we once did.

My Grandpa built this amazing slide many many years ago. When I was little it seemed like it was as high as the sky, and we all felt so brave as we climbed to the top.

I love how it looks like you could actually climb all the way to heaven! Now that my own kids want to go on this slide, it seems even higher than before! :)

It’s super fast and you barely land on your feet at the bottom, most times you land on your bum. The insane thing is that we used to rub wax paper on the slide to make it even FASTER. I refuse to give Brandon that idea now! :) We would play games and you’d have to give secret passwords (like the color of your toothbrush) at the top in order to slide down….ahhhh, good times.

We also loved climbing the big trees in their front yard and pretend we lived there, picking the “helicopter leaves” and watching them twirl to the ground. Today we let our kids climb in the little apple tree in the back yard instead, a lot smaller and safer but still a lot of fun for them. Little monkeys!!

What a fun day we had!! Hopefully our kids will have some fond memories of Grandma’s house when they get older, just like we do. :)

And we can’t forget Haylie! Here are a few recent pics of our little sweetie, just so she’s not left out. I’m going to do a “Two Month Old” post later. She is a JOY.

Last weekend was also fun. We went to Boondocks (or “Beandots” as Annie called it) for Jaden’s work summer party. I couldn’t really do much with the baby but the kids had lots of fun with Daddy. And I laughed at Jaden getting soaked on the boats.

Brandon was very intent on doing the squirting, while Annie was just enjoying the ride. She kept looking back at me, so cute.

They also loved the race track. Brandon rode with Jaden’s co-worker while Jaden took Annie.

Jaden is cool. :)

I took the girls home to go to bed and Brandon stayed late with Jaden and the guys. Miniature golfing, running around with his new friend Caleb, earning tickets at the arcade….Brandon had a blast. Hooray for “Beandots” and other fun-ness. :)

PS: Brandon brought home like 20 tickets and was so excited about them–I love this age where the tickets are cooler than the prizes they could be exchanged for. :)

I’d be scared on that slide. That’s huge! We love Boondocks. My kids think it’s hilarious to soak me on those bumper boats.

That looks like so much fun! I love the close up of Annie… her eyes just look so sparkly! I totally agree about the tickets thing. There is just something amazing about kids feeling so proud about a machine telling them “great job” by giving tickets when they do well. Oh the innocence!

Such a cute tradition with your grandma! What great memories you and your kids will have. It looks like your summer is off to an awesome start! I feel like I’m still waiting for summer to come with this darn weather lately. We need to get together soon!

If I had a quarter of the talent you have with taking pictures, you might be able to see Sophies eyes instead of a flash on her glasses!! I love this post. I miss hanging with the cousins. I hope to get to a few lunches over the summer. In the meantime, your pics get better and better when I didn’t even know they could get better!! Not sure where my self smarted video originated. It came to me in an email a long while back and I have been laughing about it ever since.
